You may find out your child’s class information at Open House a few days prior to the first day of school in August.

What to Bring:

  • Registration and Proof of Residency are now collected online by DeKalb County School District; look for more information in summer 2023
  • Proof of Residency - will need to be provided during online registration
    • Proof of Residency: either a signed lease (if you are a renter) or mortgage contract OR 1 current gas, water or electric bill (if you own your home).  Please have 1 COPY PER CHILD of EACH proof of residency document.  Note: phone, cable, credit card or other bills are NOT accepted as proof of residency.
    • 1 COPY PER CHILD of parent's photo ID along with the original.
  • For more information and Registration FAQs, please click here for the DeKalb County Registration Information page.

You will do the following: (previous year's info below for reference)

  • Sign Up to Volunteer for various PTO Committees!
  • Pick up your PTO/Foundation car magnet (if you donated to the Austin Eagle Foundation).
  • Pick up all pre-ordered Austin Spirit Wear on the cafeteria stage.
  • Purchase Socks for $15 per pair (supplies limited) and Bag Tags for $5 each.  Bring exact cash or check payable to Austin PTO.
  • Receive your child's homeroom assignment!  Stop by to meet your teacher and peek at your classroom!  Remember the teachers have many students coming through during this time, so say a quick hello, fill out any necessary paperwork, receive your carpool number and bus route information (if applicable). Please be respectful of others’ time.  It is a Meet and Greet, not a conference.

Is there a student handbook and or school calendar of events?

The student handbook and calendar of events can be found on the school website's About Us page and Homepage, respectively.

How do I begin receiving PTO emails and school newsletters?

Please register at www.austinelementary.com to receive PTO communications.

What time does Austin ES start?

The school day starts at 7:45 am and dismissal is at 2:15. Children may be dropped off starting at 7:10 am, but no earlier.

Does Austin ES follow healthy lunch guidelines?

The Dekalb County School System’s nutrition program promotes a lifetime of wellness by serving meals that are high quality, nutritious, enjoyable, and economical.

How much does a school lunch cost and how do you pay?

2022-23 School Year:

Full Paid Lunch $2.85
Milk $0.65
Reduced Lunch $0.40

The best and easiest way to pay for school lunches is to register online at www.myschoolbucks.com. The registration is easy, however you will need your child’s student ID# to register. This system allows you to prepay for lunches, add money at anytime especially when the student lunch account balance gets too low via your credit card. We highly suggest this way to pay for lunches even if your child seldom buys as it alleviates the chance of your child losing his or her lunch money and you can regulate your child’s account and see what they are actually purchasing for lunch. Any remaining balance can be refunded to your credit card or carried over to the next year and even to a new school!

Is there a school bus schedule?

The Austin School Bus Schedule can be found on the school website under the bus route link at the top. Routes and additional information from the county transportation department are included. Currently, there are 4 bus routes for Austin ES. The bus route information has details for the pickup times and the street information for each bus stop. The bus routes are the same for morning pickup and afternoon drop off.

What are the rules for carpool? If you carpool where can you drop off and pick up? If you walk your child in where can you park?

Each family is given a carpool number tag even if your child normally leaves the school by bus or as a walker. The number is not necessary for arrival. Never park your car along the front curb at any time. If you need to park please do so in a designated parking space. Pick up occurs in the front circle and you must have your child’s carpool tag. At 2:25 pm students will be dismissed for carpool and they wait inside the building until their carpool number is called over the walkie talkie. Once your child is in your car, you may take down your carpool number to let the teacher know that your carpool is complete. You may drop off your child in the morning starting at 7:10 am.  If you must park, please do so at the DNC or where it is deemed appropriate in an adjacent neighborhood. It is very important that all dismissal changes be submitted on the change of dismissal form found on the school website under the Parent tab.

The Austin Elementary Arrival-Dismissal Procedures can be found in the Austin Student Handbook.

What are the uniform rules?

Austin Elementary follows the Dress for Success School Uniform! Uniform participation is required. School colors for attire are navy, blue, white.  Khaki shorts, pants, jumpers, etc. are acceptable.  Austin Spirit Wear may be worn any day of the week. Your best resource and guide for uniform guidelines is the Austin Student Handbook, located on the About Us page of the Austin website.  Photos of typical school uniform attire are coming soon!  (Spring 2022)

Where are good places to buy uniform clothes?

Should we purchase school supplies before the start of school?

It is best to purchase school supplies before the start of school. The school supply list for each grade can be found (and ordered) at edukit.com Enter zip code 30338 to locate Austin. Select the grade-level kit to view.

Orders usually have to be placed by June 15th before the start of the next school year! Kits are not available for sale after the deadline. If you should have any questions, please contact the School Supplies chair.

What kinds of clubs and extra-curricular activities are offered?

There are opportunities for extra-curricular activities at Austin ES, while some are exclusive to certain grades. Some activities include Media Squad, School Council, Safety Patrol, Band, Girls on the Run, and Reading Bowl. Please read the Austin Newsletters and information from your teacher for more information as to how your child participates in any of these clubs.
